WINTER 2018

It is impossible to overstate the importance of building a solid foundation of word knowledge and meaning to be successful in life. Strong vocabulary skills are tied to success in reading achievement and reaching literacy milestones.

Although there has been a genuine attempt in our field to try to organize these AT solutions, the problem of systemizing these technology resources remains a struggle when incorporating them into our teaching.

Specifically, we all look at a technology tool and sometimes ask ourselves:

  • WHY would we use this tool?
  • HOW would we use this tool in a lesson?
  • WHAT skill would we be teaching through this resource?

This is why it is critical to examine a technology resource to see how many different ways we can use it. For example, one of my favorite web-based tools is Storyboard That – a digital storytelling tool – because it can be used in many diverse ways to meet educational standards.

Storyboard That can be used to teach vocabulary, provide creative and engaging literacy materials, brainstorm and compose writing projects, and also be utilized as a visual presentation tool.

I love the different layout choices – Classic, T-Chart, Grid Frayer Model, Spider Map, 16 X 9 Movie Layout, and Timeline – because these options allow you to choose the most appropriate design for the type of educational task you need to set up or offer to your students.
